Tuesday Dec. 8th - 9.30pm @ Joe's Pub - with special guest, best-selling novelist COLUM McCANN

"Outstanding concert performances... best of all was Joe Hurley's rumbling-bass baritone version of 'Send in the Clowns'"

"Joe Hurley is one of New York's most entertaining frontmen - his distinctive vocals can be raucous as all get-out and as sorrowful as a baritone can be"

"One of the most electric, profound novels... in years. 'Let the Great World Spin' is an emotional tour de force. It is a heartbreaking book, but not a depressing one. [It] can feel like a precursor to another novel of colliding cultures: 'The Bonfire of the Vanities.'"

New York, NY: Joe Hurley & The Gents annual December concert at Joe's Pub will be their only local appearance until next March, and will include the debut performance of "The House that Horse Built" live with the full band. The CD-EP "The House That Horse Built (Let The Great World Spin)" was just released by Joe Hurley and Colum McCann, and was inspired by a chapter in McCann's much-celebrated new novel "LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN."

Both Hurley and James Mastro will be celebrating their birthdays, and will be joined onstage by their fellow Gents, Tony Shanahan, Kenny Margolis, Megan Weeder, Jon Spurney (Passing Strange), and Denny McDermott (Rosanne Cash ) along with some very special guests, including gospel great Tami Lynn! With Christmas 'round the corner, there may very well be a Holiday classic or two (Slade? Kinks? Baby It's Cold Outside...). The night will also include a CD signing with Hurley, McCann, and the band at the venue with a post-gig party to follow!

Critically acclaimed NYC singer-songwriter Joe Hurley and Colum McCann's songwriting collaboration has resulted in a glorious 12 minute epic, sprawling across the wastelands and heartbreaks of a prostitute's life in 1974 NYC. "The House that Horse Built (Let the Great World Spin)" shivers and slides it's way through the darkness and into the light with unbreakable spirit amidst a stunning musical and lyrical landscape of grit, defiance, love, and surrender.

With Hurley on vocals and guitar, the CD-EP features an all-star cast of musicians including many of The Gents: Tony Shanahan - bass (Patti Smith Band), James Mastro - guitar (Ian Hunter Band), Kenny Margolis - piano (Cracker), Dennis Diken - drums (Smithereens), Matt Sweeney - guitar (Johnny Cash, Bonnie "Prince" Billy), gospel great Tami Lynn (Rolling Stones, Dr. John), soul singer/film actress Antonique Smith, Joe McGinty, Faith Hahn and 6-time Grammy winner Paddy Moloney of the legendary CHIEFTAINS. The limited edition CD was produced by Don Fleming (Sonic Youth, Pete Yorn).

This CD-EP is the first part of a Hurley/McCann's recording project that will ultimately see a full-length CD based on the book, released in the spring of 2010. McCann's novel is a National Book Awards Finalist 2009 and Amazon's #1 Book of the Year. McCann and Hurley recently returned from a month-long tour of Europe, launching the book and CD to packed venues, from London to Paris, Berlin to Vienna.

Joe Hurley, a London-bred, Irish-blooded New Yorker, has sung with the CHIEFTAINS, The Nick Drake Orchestra, Judy Collins, Sam Shepard, Laura Cantrell, Maude Maggart, Marianne Faithfull, The Waco Bros., Shane MacGowan & others. He is the leader of two NYC groups, Rogue's March and Joe Hurley & The Gents, and has appeared everywhere from Lincoln Centre to Central Park Summerstage to festivals all over the USA. He has been produced on records by Tony Visconti and PJ Harvey.
